Whose Head is on My Header!?
Meet Dionysus, the Greek God of wine, theater, and joy. In Roman mythology, Dionysus is known as Bacchus. Word is that Bacchus was more of a fat and ugly drunk while Dionysus was much more sophisticated in his partying ways. Dionysus was considered to be a kind-hearted, generous god who was always looking for ways to help people and share his joy of wine. As such, he was very popular among mortals and gods who honored him at countless festivals throughout the year.
Dionysus was also quite the ladies man. Married to Ariadne, he also had affairs with many other goddesses, including Aphrodite, the goddess of love and Nyx, the goddess of night. He was quite productive and soon the place was crawling with little wine gods!
Son of Zeus and the beautiful princess Semele, Dionysus was one of the few Olympian gods who did not live on Mount Olympus. One could argue he was one of the first ‘flying winemakers’ since he spent his life traveling the land discovering many winemaking secrets! One of my favorite legends about our wine god was this one.
Dionysus was chasing the Amazons for years and this group of highly skilled female warriors despised him. The Amazons fled to the island of Samos and of course Dionysus followed. Dionysus begged the locals for their assistance and together they killed the Amazons. In return, Dionysus taught the Samians how to cultivate vines and shared his winemaking secrets. The wines were so well-liked around the world (and still are!) that many poets were inspired to pen such famous accolades like that of Lord Byron in “The Isles of Greece” – Fill high the cup with Samian wine!
